We’re proud to share that Dr. Ted Carter, PT, DPT, Senior Regional Director of Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy, was recently featured in HealthCentral discussing the power of “exercise snacks”—small, manageable bursts of movement that can make a big impact on health.
Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, every active minute adds up, improving mood, sleep, brain function, and heart health while reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. But if you have a chronic condition, traditional workouts can feel daunting. That’s where exercise snacks come in.
“Squeezing in exercise—even just a minute here and there—is absolutely vital,” says Carter. While they may seem short, these micro workouts still pack a punch. Research shows that even quick three-to-four-minute bursts of activity throughout the day can significantly improve heart and lung health, lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of diseases linked to inactivity.
Beyond the physical benefits, these short workouts can boost mental well-being. “Even just a couple of minutes of exercise will release endorphins that elevate mood and decrease pain,” Carter explains. “It will increase your heart rate and help build good habits.”
Carter also recommends habit stacking to make exercise a daily routine. “Try adding a dozen arm curls every time you brush your teeth or five squats every time you use the bathroom,” he suggests. These small wins create momentum, making it easier to maintain an active lifestyle.
Whether you’re looking for new ways to stay active or need motivation to get moving, Dr. Carter’s insights offer a simple and effective approach.
