Shelby Smith of Advanced Physical Therapy Featured on KSN-TV for Heart Health Awareness

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, making heart health a critical conversation for communities nationwide. Recently, Dr. Shelby Smith, DPT, a Physical Therapist from Advanced Physical Therapy, was featured on a KSN-TV news segment, highlighting the importance of staying active and embracing a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The segment followed Gayla Lang, a community member whose passion for health and wellness stems from personal experience. With a family history of heart disease, Gayla has committed herself to fostering a healthier community, both through her work and personal journey. As a group exercise instructor at the YMCA, she teaches SilverSneakers classes designed to keep older adults moving and engaged.

However, Gayla faced a significant setback when she suffered a compression fracture and back pain. That’s when Shelby stepped in to help. Through personalized physical therapy at Advanced Physical Therapy, Gayla has been on the road to recovery, aiming to return to teaching and inspiring others.

“She is a wonderful example of staying active in your later years,” Shelby shared in the segment. “Right now, we’re working on rehabbing her so she can get back to leading SilverSneakers classes and continue making a difference in our community.”

Gayla’s message to those looking to lead healthier lives is clear: You don’t have to accept where you’re at. She actively encourages her neighbors to embrace fitness and even offers training for free in her community.

According to research, fewer than 14% of adults aged 65 and older meet federal physical activity guidelines, despite evidence that genetics only account for 25% of lifespan variation. Gayla is determined to change that statistic by motivating others to take charge of their health.

Shelby reinforced that living longer and healthier is achievable with the right steps. Beyond physical activity, she recommends managing stress, prioritizing sleep (aiming for seven to nine hours per night), and ensuring a diet rich in protein, fiber, and essential micronutrients.
