How Hybrid Work Supports Healthier Employees: Insights from Confluent Health’s Mark Steiger

The debate over the benefits of hybrid work continues, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: hybrid workers are healthier. A recent study from the International Workplace Group, featured in HR Magazine, revealed that hybrid employees take fewer sick days, prioritize preventative healthcare, and experience lower stress levels.

Mark Steiger, Chief Operating Officer at Confluent Health, weighed in on these findings, emphasizing that HR leaders should be proactive in fostering workplace systems that promote well-being—regardless of where employees work.

Key Findings on Hybrid Worker Health

The study, which surveyed 2,000 hybrid workers across the UK, uncovered some compelling insights:

  • Fewer Sick Days: 34% of hybrid workers reported taking fewer sick days compared to their fully in-office counterparts.
  • Preventative Healthcare Focus: 71% of hybrid employees said they made more time for regular screenings, check-ups, and lifestyle improvements.
  • Lower Stress-Related Conditions: 68% of respondents experienced fewer stress-related health issues.
  • Better Condition Management: 69% reported being better able to manage ongoing healthcare conditions.

Mark Steiger’s Take on HR’s Role in Employee Health

At Confluent Health, we understand that musculoskeletal (MSK) health and overall well-being are critical to workforce productivity. Mark Steiger shared his perspective with HR Magazine, reinforcing the importance of building a health-conscious workplace:

“HR’s role is to create systems that make healthy choices easy. That means aligning policies, benefits, and culture around resilience, strength, and well-being.”

He highlighted practical ways HR can empower employees:

  • Mobility Education: Providing employees with knowledge on movement and posture to prevent chronic MSK issues.
  • Wearable Tech: Encouraging the use of smart devices to track activity levels and promote movement.
  • Access to Health Experts: Offering virtual and in-person consultations with physical therapists and personal trainers.

The Future of Workplace Well-being

The connection between work environment and health outcomes is undeniable. Hybrid work allows employees the flexibility to integrate healthier habits into their daily routines. However, as Steiger pointed out, it’s up to HR and organizational leaders to ensure that well-being is embedded in company culture—not just as an option, but as an expectation.
