Dr. Stephen Clark, PT, DPT, OCS, ATC, Clinical Innovations Director at Confluent Health, recently shared expert insights with USA Today about the role genetics play in achieving fitness goals. The discussion stemmed from actor Paul Mescal’s preparation for Gladiator II, where he revealed spending only 45 minutes a day in the gym to build his physique.
Mescal credited his Gaelic football background and genetics for helping him transform without hours-long training sessions. While social media debates the feasibility of his routine, Dr. Clark provided a professional take, emphasizing the personalized nature of fitness.
“You might ask: ‘Am I a lost cause because of my genetics?’ The answer is no, but you may have to work differently to achieve the same result,” says Dr. Clark.
He also highlighted the importance of aligning workout intensity, duration, and effort with individual goals:
“If your goal is not to look like a gladiator, your effort shouldn’t be the same. All exercise should be added gradually and at rates your body can handle to avoid injury.”
Dr. Clark’s advice serves as a reminder that while genetics play a role, consistency, tailored routines, and gradual progression are key to success.
