Dr. Devin Trachman, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, Clinic Director at Physical Therapy Central’s West Edmond Clinic, was recently featured in Real Simple’s article: “Dead Butt Syndrome Is Real—Here’s How to Wake Up Your Glutes After Sitting Too Much.”
In the article, Trachman provides expert insight into a condition commonly referred to as Dead Butt Syndrome—a colloquial name for gluteal amnesia, where the glute muscles “forget” how to activate properly, often due to prolonged periods of sitting.
“Because people are not able to properly engage the muscles necessary for movements like squats and transitions from sitting to standing, people begin to develop compensation patterns that place increased stress on other muscles and joints in the body,” Trachman explains.
Signs You Might Be Experiencing Dead Butt Syndrome:
According to Trachman, common symptoms can include:
- Difficulty engaging glutes during physical activity
- Low back or hip pain from poor movement patterns
- Numbness or soreness in the glute/hip region
- Sciatic or radiating pain
- Tight hip flexors and poor posture
- Weakness in abdominals and lower body
- Pain in distal joints like the knee or ankle
These symptoms aren’t just uncomfortable—they can lead to longer-term mobility issues and reduced performance in everyday activities.
